A quiz is the fastest way to get a starting answer, but the actual technique professional colorists use — draping — is something you can approximate at home with fabric you probably already own. This isn’t a substitute for the structured logic a quiz gives you, but doing both together tends to produce the most confident result.
What You'll Need
- A mirror in a room with strong, indirect natural daylight (avoid direct sun and any artificial bulbs)
- No makeup, and hair pulled back or covered with a plain white or gray cloth
- A pile of fabric or clothing in as many different colors as you can gather — the wider the range, the better
- Ideally, someone else to help you notice changes, since it’s genuinely harder to judge your own face objectively
Step 1: Set Up Your Lighting
This is the step people skip and the one that ruins the whole exercise. Sit near a window with light coming from the front or side, not directly behind you. Avoid doing this at night under lamps or overhead lighting — warm bulbs will make every color look warmer than it actually is, and cool LED lighting does the reverse.
Step 2: Neutralize Your Starting Point
Pull your hair back completely, or cover it with a plain white or light gray cloth. This matters more than people expect — your actual hair color is part of what’s being evaluated, and if it’s visible and colorful, it competes with the fabric you’re testing. Remove makeup, especially blush and lipstick, since both can shift how a test color reads against your skin.
Step 3: Test in Direct Contrast Pairs
Rather than holding up colors one at a time, hold up two contrasting options back to back — a warm color, then a cool color, in quick succession. This is how professional colorists actually work, because the eye is much better at detecting a change than judging a single color in isolation.
Watch for:
- Does your skin look clearer or does it look flushed/blotchy?
- Do shadows under your eyes get more or less visible?
- Does the color seem to sit on top of your skin, or blend into it?
- Do your eyes look brighter or duller?
A color that’s right for you tends to make your whole face look more awake and lifted. A color that’s wrong tends to create a strange flatness, or pull attention toward under-eye circles, redness, or dullness that wasn’t as visible a moment ago.
Step 4: Narrow Down Warm vs. Cool First
Before worrying about light/deep or clear/muted, spend most of your testing time on the warm-versus-cool question, since it’s the foundation everything else builds on. Test a warm gold against a cool silver fabric, a warm coral against a cool pink, a warm camel against a cool gray. The pattern across several pairs should start pointing clearly one direction.
Step 5: Test Depth and Clarity
Once you have a warm/cool answer, test within that half of the spectrum. If you landed warm, compare a light, bright warm color (like peach) against a deep, muted warm color (like rust) to see whether you lean Spring or Autumn. If you landed cool, compare a light, soft cool color (like powder blue) against a deep, vivid cool color (like sapphire) to see whether you lean Summer or Winter.
Common Mistakes That Skew a DIY Draping Session
- Testing at night or under artificial light — the single biggest source of bad results
- Not removing makeup first — even subtle blush changes what you’re actually observing
- Rushing through single colors instead of contrasting pairs — the eye needs comparison to judge accurately
- Testing with dyed hair visible — cover it, since dyed color can visually confuse the undertone read
- Judging based on whether you like the color rather than how it changes your face — these are genuinely different questions
Combine It With a Structured Quiz
DIY draping is a strong way to confirm or double-check a result, but it takes real time and a decent fabric collection to do thoroughly. A structured quiz gets you to a strong starting hypothesis in a few minutes, which you can then confirm with the fabric test above — rather than draping blind with no starting direction at all.
